Rebuilding Mental Math Master: From Kotlin to Flutter

19 October 2026

A while back, I was sitting in a coffee shop, watching kids effortlessly solve arithmetic problems on their tablets. It struck me: why wasn’t I doing more to help adults train their brains too? This led to the birth of Mental Math Master—a simple yet effective app for honing mental arithmetic skills. But as we grew, the tech behind it started feeling outdated. That’s when I decided to take the plunge and rebuild the app using Flutter.

The Problem

When I first created Mental Math Master, I was enamored with Kotlin and Android in general. But a few months in, I realized that I wanted a more unified approach that could also extend to iOS. With so many brain training apps flooding the market, I knew my app had to stand out. The challenge was clear: I needed a platform that allowed for faster development and a smoother user experience across devices.

The Build / Story

Transitioning from Kotlin to Flutter felt like entering a new world. The first step was to ensure all the functionalities of the old app were preserved while enhancing user experience. I loved the hot-reload feature in Flutter—it was liberating. I could see changes happen in real-time without waiting through lengthy build times.

But here’s a confession: not everything went smoothly. I hit a wall while trying to recreate the app’s scoring system. Kotlin had some neat functionalities that I had to find ways to implement in Dart without complicating things. After days of wrestling with it, I finally came up with a solution that not only worked but was even easier to maintain. It made me realize that sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to unexpected improvements.

Key Features

Engaging Math Problems We’ve included a variety of math problems that users can tackle based on their skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner or a math whiz, we’ve got something for everyone!

Multiple Game Modes The app isn’t just one-size-fits-all. Users can choose between timed challenges and relaxed modes, allowing them to train under different conditions, just like real-life scenarios.

Leaderboards and Achievements Who doesn’t love a little competition? Users can see how they stack up against others and earn achievements for challenging themselves. It’s all about motivation!

Progress Tracking We’ve implemented a nifty progress tracker that helps users visualize their performance over time. It’s rewarding to see how much you improve with consistent effort.

Real Numbers / Proof Since the relaunch, Mental Math Master has accumulated around 500 downloads. We’re primarily popular in Bangladesh and a few neighboring countries, which is pretty cool! Users have shared feedback that highlights the clean interface and varied problem sets, but we’re honest about our shortfalls as well. We still have a long way to go in terms of marketing, but it’s rewarding to see the initial impact despite being in the early stages.

You can check it out yourself on the Play Store [here](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thenoob.mental_math_master). We’re always striving to improve and bring more to the table! Closing Looking forward, I plan to bring even more features, including personalized training plans and multiplayer modes to challenge friends. I want to create an engaging community that loves to learn. In the end, it’s all about building a better brain for everyone. Here’s to growth and mental math mastery!
