Can You Take the Life in the UK Test Online?

29 October 2026

No, you can't take the Life in the UK test online. You book it online on GOV.UK, but you sit the test in person at an approved test centre.

How booking works

You book on the official GOV.UK website at least 3 days before you want to take the test. You'll need an email address, a debit or credit card, and the ID you'll bring on the day. Only book through GOV.UK so you don't pay extra fees to third-party sites.

Where you take it

There are approved test centres across the UK. You choose the centre and date when you book. The test itself is taken on a computer at the centre.

What to bring

  • The same ID you used to book
  • Arrive early: if you're late, you may not be allowed to sit the test

What about practising online?

Practice is a different story: you can prepare fully online. Free mock tests let you practise with the real format of 24 questions in 45 minutes, so the computer-based test feels familiar on the day.

Always check GOV.UK for the latest rules before you book. Try a free mock test below to see where you stand.
