Security+ vs CySA+: Which Should You Take First?
28 October 2026
For most people, Security+ comes first. It's CompTIA's entry-level cybersecurity certification, and CySA+ is an intermediate certification that builds on it.
CompTIA Security+
- Covers core security concepts, threats, security architecture, operations and governance
- Often listed as a requirement for entry-level security jobs
- A good first certification if you're moving into security
CompTIA CySA+
- Focuses on the work of a security analyst: monitoring, vulnerability management and incident response
- More hands-on and scenario-based
- Best once you have Security+ or some security experience
Which to choose
- New to security: start with Security+
- Already working in a security operations role: CySA+ may suit you better
- Planning a career in a SOC: take both, Security+ first
How to prepare for either
- Use the official exam objectives as your checklist
- Practise domain by domain and focus on your weakest areas
- Book when you score 85% or more consistently in practice
