Hazard Perception Test Tips: How to Pass First Time
27 October 2026
The hazard perception part of the UK theory test is all about timing. Click when you see a hazard starting to develop, and click again as it develops.
How it works
- You watch 14 video clips
- The pass mark is 44 out of 75
- Each developing hazard can score up to 5 points: the earlier you spot it, the more you score
Common mistakes
- Clicking too early, before the hazard has started to develop
- Clicking constantly or in a pattern: the test can treat this as cheating and score that clip zero
- Only looking at the road ahead and missing side roads, pedestrians and parked cars
Tips that work
- Scan the whole scene, including mirrors and side streets
- Click when something changes: a car signals, a pedestrian steps out, a door opens
- Click 2 or 3 times as a hazard develops, but don't spam the button
- Practise with clips regularly
Don't forget the multiple-choice part
You also need 43 out of 50 in the multiple-choice questions, and you must pass both parts at the same sitting.
