CompTIA A+ Core 1 vs Core 2: What's the Difference?

26 October 2026

To earn CompTIA A+, you need to pass two exams: Core 1 and Core 2. They cover different topics, and you can take them in either order.

Core 1 (220-1201)

  • Mobile devices, networking and hardware
  • Virtualisation and cloud computing
  • Hardware and network troubleshooting
  • Passing score: 675 on a scale of 100 to 900

Core 2 (220-1202)

  • Operating systems
  • Security
  • Software troubleshooting
  • Operational procedures
  • Passing score: 700 on a scale of 100 to 900

Which to take first?

Most people take Core 1 first, because hardware and networking basics make Core 2 easier to understand. If you already work with operating systems and support tickets, starting with Core 2 can work too.

How to prepare

  • Use the official exam objectives as your checklist
  • Study one domain at a time
  • Book each exam when you score 85% or more consistently in practice
