Life in the UK Test 2026: Questions and Pass Mark

25 October 2026

The Life in the UK test is one of the first steps towards settlement and British citizenship. If you're preparing for it, these are the numbers that matter.

How many questions are there?

The test has 24 multiple-choice questions. Some ask you to pick one answer and some ask you to pick two, so read every question carefully.

What is the pass mark?

You need 18 correct answers out of 24, which is 75%. You get your result at the test centre before you leave.

How long do you get?

You have 45 minutes. Most people finish well before that, so there's time to check your answers.

Where do the questions come from?

Every question is based on the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents. The test covers British values, history, traditions, society, law and government.

How to prepare

  • Read the handbook chapter by chapter
  • Practise questions by topic until you know each chapter well
  • Take timed mock tests until you score 20 or more every time
  • Review every wrong answer and the part of the handbook it came from

What if you fail?

You can book again, but you must wait at least 7 days and pay the fee again. That's why it's worth practising until you pass mock tests comfortably.

Rules and fees can change, so always check GOV.UK before you book. Want to see where you stand? Take a free mock test below.
