UK Driving Theory Test 2026: Pass Marks & Hazard Perception

24 October 2026

The car theory test has two parts, and you must pass both at the same sitting. Here's what each part involves.

Part 1: multiple-choice questions

You answer 50 questions in 57 minutes, and you need 43 correct answers to pass. The questions cover topics like alertness, safety margins, road signs, motorway rules and vulnerable road users.

Part 2: hazard perception

You watch 14 video clips and click when you spot a developing hazard. The pass mark is 44 out of 75. Clicking too early, or clicking in a pattern, can score zero for that clip.

How to book

Book on GOV.UK with your provisional licence number. Only use the official site so you don't pay extra fees.

Top tips

  • Learn stopping distances and common road signs: they come up a lot
  • Take full timed mock tests, not just short quizzes
  • Practise hazard perception clips regularly
  • Aim for 47 or more out of 50 in mocks before you book

How long is a pass valid?

Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years. You need to pass your practical driving test within that time.

Rules and fees can change, so check GOV.UK before booking. Try a free 50-question mock test below.
