Which CompTIA Certification Should You Take First?
23 October 2026
CompTIA certifications are vendor-neutral, so they're recognised by employers around the world. If you're not sure where to start, this is the path most people follow.
1. CompTIA A+
A+ is the starting point for IT support roles. It has two exams: Core 1 covers hardware, mobile devices, networking and troubleshooting, and Core 2 covers operating systems, security and operational procedures. You need to pass both.
2. CompTIA Network+
Network+ proves you can set up, manage and troubleshoot networks. It's a natural next step after A+, and a strong base for any security role.
3. CompTIA Security+
Security+ is the most popular entry-level cybersecurity certification. Many employers list it as a requirement for security jobs.
4. CompTIA CySA+
CySA+ is an intermediate certification for security analysts. It focuses on detecting threats, managing vulnerabilities and responding to incidents.
Can you skip ahead?
Yes. CompTIA doesn't force you to take exams in order. If you already work in IT, you might start with Network+ or Security+. Just make sure you're comfortable with the basics each exam assumes.
